Using the app

What does Dupe Detective do?

You scan a paper receipt with your iPhone camera, and the app reads the line items and highlights anything that appears more than once, such as an item scanned twice at the register.

Which stores does Dupe Detective work with?

It works with receipts from Costco, Kroger, Fry's, Sam's Club, Walmart and most major grocery stores. You can scan a paper receipt or import a digital one.

Does my grocery list sync between my Mac and iPhone?

Yes. Make your list in Dupe Detective on your Mac and it syncs to your iPhone, as long as both devices are signed in with the same Apple ID.

While you shop, your list scrolls across the top of the app like a stock ticker, so you can see what's left at a glance.

Is Dupe Detective free?

Yes. It's free to download with no subscription required. An optional Pro upgrade unlocks unlimited receipt scanning.

Is a duplicate item always a mistake?

No. If you bought two of the same thing, both lines are correct. The app points out repeats so you can check them; you decide whether one is an error.

Does it work on my Mac?

Yes. Saved receipts and flagged duplicates sync between your iPhone and Mac through iCloud when you're signed in to the same Apple Account.

Why do I see the same charge twice on my card?

Usually one of them is a pending hold that drops off within a few days. Restaurants, gas stations and hotels do this. If both charges have posted, the payment probably went through twice. Read Why was I charged twice?

How do I get a refund for a duplicate charge?

The fastest fix is to catch it before you leave the store. Scan your receipt, then show the highlighted line to the cashier or customer service.

If you've already left, go back or call the store with your receipt. If the store won't fix it, dispute the charge in your banking app or by calling the number on the back of your card. Our guide Double charged? What to do next walks through each step.

Privacy and data

Are my receipts uploaded anywhere?

No. Receipts are processed on your device. If you use sync, your data is stored in your own private iCloud database, which the developers cannot access.

Can the developers see my receipts?

No. Synced data lives in your private iCloud database. We can't read it, we don't store it on our servers, and we don't share it with anyone. Details are in our privacy policy.

Why does the app need camera access?

The camera is used only when you choose to scan a receipt. You can turn camera access off at any time in Settings, then Dupe Detective.

How do I delete my data?

Deleting the app removes the data stored on that device.

To remove the copy synced to iCloud, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then manage your storage and delete the Dupe Detective data.
