Charged twice for an item at the grocery store? How to get a refund
Short answer
Take your receipt to customer service and point out the item that was scanned twice. Most stores refund the extra charge on the spot. If you've already left, call or go back with the receipt. If the store won't fix it, you can dispute the overcharge with your card issuer.
Skip the hassle next time. Scan your receipt with Dupe Detective before you leave the store. It takes a few seconds, and a double charge caught at the register is fixed on the spot.
How it happens
Register mistakes are common. In a 2024 national survey, 23% of store price inspections failed the accuracy standard. See the checkout overcharge statistics.
- The scanner doesn't beep, so the cashier scans the item again and both scans count.
- A multi-pack is scanned as a pack and then one item inside it is scanned too.
- At self-checkout, an item is scanned twice when the bagging area acts up or the barcode is read on the second pass.
Check before you leave
It takes about a minute. Look for the same item name and price on two lines, and compare the item count on the receipt with what's in your bags. Fixing it at the register or customer service desk is much faster than calling later. A 30-second receipt checklist.
If you notice at home
- Keep the receipt. Receipts are printed on thermal paper that fades, so take a photo of it too.
- Call or go back to the store. Ask for customer service and explain which item was charged twice. Most stores can look up the transaction and refund the difference to your card.
- Ask about the store's scanning policy. Some stores, and some states such as Michigan, have rules that give you a credit when the register overcharges you.
- If the store refuses, dispute the overcharged amount with your card issuer. Here's how.
Self-checkout
If you scanned something twice yourself, ask the attendant to void the extra line before you pay. If you already paid, take the receipt to customer service. A double scan at self-checkout is a common mistake, and stores handle it the same way.
Dupe Detective reads your receipt and highlights any item that appears more than once, so you can catch a double scan before you leave the parking lot.
